Learn the proper steps to follow in the event of an accident to keep yourself safe

IN A COLLISION? HERE’S WHAT TO DO NEXT.

Step 1 - STAY SAFE

Move to a safe location. Check for any injuries to passengers and call emergency services as soon as possible.     In a crash, built-in sensors in an OnStar Equipped vehicle can detect when a collision has occurred using OnStar Automatic Crash Response† and transmit that information to a specially trained OnStar Advisor, who can pinpoint your vehicle’s location, call for help and provide medical treatment options until first responders arrive.

Step 2 - PHOTOGRAPH THE SCENE

If possible, photograph the scene, including:

  • License plates
  • Damage to the vehicle(s)
  • Surroundings including buildings, road signs or landmarks
  • Skid marks
  • Fluid leaks
  • Weather and road conditions
  • Any injuries (if appropriate and safe)

Step 3 - GATHER INFORMATION

If possible, gather the following information:

  • Date and time of the accident
  • Location (street names, landmarks and GPS coordinates)
  • Driver details (name, phone, address and license number)
  • Vehicle details (make, model, year, color, license plate and VIN)
  • Insurance information (company and policy number)
  • Passenger details (names and contact info)
  • Witness info (names and contact info)
  • Police officer info (name, badge number and report number)

Step 4 - CONTACT YOUR AUTO INSURANCE

File a claim with your insurance company. Ask your advisor, “Will GM OE parts be used in my repair?” You have the right to request GM Original Equipment (OE) parts for your GM vehicle, even if your insurance plan does not specifically cover them.

Step 5 - REQUEST OE PARTS

To help restore your vehicle as close as possible to its original, pre-collision condition, insist on GM OE parts through the repair process for your Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac vehicle. These parts help promote safe and proper repair, and help ensure the operation of critical safety systems.

Step 6 - CHOOSE A CERTIFIED SHOP

The GM Collision Repair Network (CRN) shops follow GM-approved procedures and use GM OE parts with trained technicians. You choose where you want your vehicle repaired not your insurance company !
